U-Boat watches - The Fontana
Family was always full of bright, innovative minds. They had a workshop in
Italy, where they created products they labeled with their brand name U-Boat. In
1942, the head of the company, Ilvo Fontana, was asked by the Italian government
to create a very complicated, very genius watch for the Italian Navy pilots and
submarines operators. The government requested that the watch had a big, bold
face to it so that the men using them could know the time just by quickly
glancing at their wrist. Also, the government requested that the watch would be
readable in almost any form of light and can make it through any weather
conditions. They were to be very original and one hundred percent accurate.
Excited with this request, Fontana got to work very quickly on his newest
product. Once he had the design laid out and the mechanics all arranged, the
government decided to not go forward with this watch, therefore canceling their
request for Fontana. Disappointed, Fontana set aside his plans and stored them
away for over sixty years.
In the year 2000, a late cousin of Ilvo, Italo Fontana, took over the Fontana
Family’s workshop. He felt as though their company could do more; be a lot more
successful than it already was. So, one day, he came across his cousin’s watch
plans. Studying them very carefully, Italo decided that this watch was what he
was looking for. He worked on the watch and, once he began to sell it, U-Boat
became one of the top watch brands in the world. Shortly after, he became a
world wide success story.
U-Boat watches are some of the most
