Ariosto Jones was an American engineer and watch maker.
In 1868, he travelled to Switzerland and founded his watch factory, planning to
supply USA with movements. Little did he know, however, his brave little act of
opening shop in Switzerland unannounced was one of the biggest mistakes Jones
could have ever made. Little did he know, that during the time he planned on
having his biggest amount of business, there was a giant economic problem that
sent Switzerland into large amounts of debts, causing many citizens to loose
their jobs. However, an industrialist by the name of Johann Heinrich Moser
turned around the entire economy, setting up plants and factories all over the
place. He got Switzerland successfully out of its recession. In 1850, Moser met
Jones in the town of Schaffhausen, Switzerland. Moser liked Jones’ ideas and
philosophies and, in fear of his job, Jones agreed to team up with Moser and
created the International Watch Company (IWC) in Schaffhausen.
Quickly, the team became a huge international success. In the year 1900, Germany
became IWC’s biggest customer, having citizens of the country buy millions and
millions of watches each year.
