Luxury Watch Care Tips
Basic Luxury watch care and maintenance tips
So you’ve made an investment in a high quality, designer,
expensive men’s watch
and would like to know the basics of how to care for your new timepiece. Not all
watches are created equal, so read your instruction manual to understand the
unique features of your watch.
The performance and life of your luxury men’s watch depends on proper care
and maintenance. Your manual should recommend how often the watch and band
should be serviced and the warranty usually specifies that your watch be checked
and cleaned on a regular basis by a service center authorized by the
manufacturer. Basic everyday care includes avoiding contact and situations that
can damage or affect the performance of your watch.
Most designer watches, if not all, are mechanical movement. Many are also
automatic or self winding, which means that the watch is wound automatically by
the motion of the wearer’s arm.
Companies that produce fine watches such as Rolex, TAG Heuer and
Omega create watches that are chronometers, an extremely accurate watch. Usually
mechanical, the precision of this watch is stringently tested, verified and
rated. A certificate is issued by a Swiss watch testing agency that has the
official capacity to rate a watch as a chronometer, thus verifying its’ superior
quality as a timepiece.
Many expensive men’s watches are created with the highest quality standards and
are designed with outstanding materials that are built to resist some of the
problems outlined here.
Water
Water resistance varies depending on the watch. There is a standardized measure
of water resistance that ranges from simply withstanding splashes of water to
watches that can endure deep sea diving. If your expensive men’s watch does come
in full contact with water beyond it’s resistance level, take it to a watchmaker
to assess if there has been damage.
Salt water is more damaging than regular water as it can cause corrosion, so if
you are frequently near salt water you may consider a watch that can withstand
these conditions. Heavily chlorinated water is also a problem, so bear this in
mind when wearing your expensive men’s watch.
Chemicals
Avoid contact with any chemicals, solvents or gases while wearing your expensive
men’s watch. Even common household products like hairspray can damage the watch,
especially the finish. Keep in mind that these items can cause deterioration,
discoloration or other damage to your watch or may change the color of cases,
bracelets and straps.
Magnetism
Magnetism is not usually a concern with expensive men’s watches as most of them
are mechanical and are created with special attention to movement and precision.
Analogue watches can be strongly affected by magnetism, however, as common
electromagnetic sources such as mobile phones, televisions, refrigerators etc.
can affect the tiny motors that move the hands.
Very strong magnetism can also affect mechanical watches, causing the watches to
either run fast, too slow or even stop altogether. If a mechanical watch is
affected by magnetism, it remains in the watch even after removing it from the
source of magnetism. This may last fairly long and therefore the watch must be
demagnetized without delay. Consult a watchmaker to have this corrected.
Temperature Extremes
A watch should not be left in extreme heat or cold for any extended lengths of
time. Some watches are designed for extreme temperatures, so if this is a
consideration for you, make sure you purchase a watch that can withstand the
conditions.
Shocks
Your watch is a precision measuring instrument and must be treated carefully and
with respect. Avoid dropping the watch or subjecting it to undue shocks.
Precision watches should not be worn while participating in high impact sports.
Straps and bracelets
To clean metal bracelets, they should be washed carefully in water or if
necessary, use a soft toothbrush with soap and water. Dry carefully with a soft
cloth. If your watch is not water resistant, ensure you do not get water on the
case. Cases should be wiped gently with a slightly damp cloth and dried
carefully.
If your luxury watch or strap ever becomes wet with perspiration, wipe
it dry immediately with a soft cloth and put it in a well ventilated area to
dry. Never put it in a sealed container when it is still damp. Also, do not
leave your watch in direct sunlight as the strap color may fade.
